Europa!
Friday, May 27, 2016
6:45
Toronto
Trinity St Paul's

For our final concert of Season 3, Trio Arkel explores Europe, named after the goddess Europa. A playful and virtuosic first half with works by Hummel and Jean Cras gives way to the depth of Kodaly and Penderecki's Quartet for Clarinet and Strings, a profound work composed in 1993. Our guest artist, Yao Guang Zhai, is the Associate Prinicipal Clarinet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and a sought-after soloist and chamber music on three continents.

Each concert presented by Trio Arkel begins with an informational talk at 6:45 P.M., given by founding member Marie Berard.

TRIO ARKEL presents a program of chamber music by composers who took a chance on love; for some it worked out, and for others....not so much. Their stories are full of intrigue and romance, and the passion lives on in their music.

Our guest star is oboist Sarah Jeffrey, Principal Oboe of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She joins us for Mozart's Oboe Quartet and Britten's Phantasy Quartet, which is not often heard. In between these treats are the string trios of Lennox Berkeley and Ernst von Dohnányi, who are the lovers of the day.

Trio Arkel is Marie Berard, Concertmaster of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra; Teng Li, Principal Viola of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Winona Zelenka, Assistant Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Pro Musica Hebraica presents: ARC Ensemble
Thursday, May 7, 2015
7:30pm
Washington
Terrace Theater

Pro Musica Hebraica presents a listening tour of the moment just before 1933 through three unique works all composed between 1928 and 1931 performed by perennial favorites The ARC Ensemble.

The ARC Ensemble
  Erika Raum, violin
  Marie Berard, violin
  Steven Dann, viola
  Winona Zelenka, cello
  David Louie, piano
  Dianne Werner, piano

The Nazi rise to power in 1933 cut short the careers of a generation of Jewish composers just entering their prime. Those who survived found their music branded as racially impure and banned from the concert hall. Even after the war, the shadows of Nazism continued to engulf these composers, obscuring some of their greatest masterpieces. In this concert, Pro Musica Hebraica presents a listening tour of the moment just before 1933 through three unique works all composed between 1928 and 1931. Perennial favorites The ARC Ensemble (Artists of the Royal Conservatory of Canada) return with stunning pieces by three titans of the post-World War I generation of European Jewish composers--Viennese romantic Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Polish modernist Jerzy Fitelberg, and Italian neoclassicist Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco.

"[The ARC Ensemble] played with earthy gusto [and] riveted the audience's attention." (The Washington Post)

Performance Timing: Part One - 40 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 38 min.
